Crochet adult size winter hat - floppy brim

Crochet an adult size winter hat with a wide, floppy brim and a flower as embellishment.

This is my own crochet pattern.  UK terminology and symbols used here.

Items required
4mm size crochet hook, yarn needle or sewing needle to sew on button, a round button or four buttons, 8 ply or DK Acrylic yarn.
I used Needles Quality Acrylic Yarn, burgundy red colour. Used less than 1 ball of yarn?  For this hat, I had a button sewn onto a 2 layer daisy.

Stitches used:  double crochet, single crochet, half double crochet and shell pattern.

Time taken:  5 hours.

Pattern for hat, use 4mm hook.
Found chain - do 6 chains.
Round 1:  Ch 3, dc17 times. First chain counts as one stitch.
Round 2:  Ch 3, 2 dc in each st.  (34 stitches)
Round 3: Ch 3, *1 dc in first and next stitch, 2 dc in every third stitch.  Repeat * sequence to end of this round. Slip stitch to third stitch of turning chain.
Round 4: Ch 3, *1 dc in each of next 3 stitches, then 2 dc in every fourth stitch.  Repeat * sequence to end of this round. Slip stitch to third stitch of turning chain.
Round 5: Ch 3, *1 dc in each of next 4 stitches, then 2 dc in every fifth stitch.  Repeat * sequence to end of this round. Slip stitch to third stitch of turning chain.
Round 6:  Ch 3, *1 dc in each of next 5 stitches, then 2 dc in every sixth stitch.  Repeat * sequence to end of this round. Slip stitch to third stitch of turning chain.
Round 7:  Ch 1, 1 sc in each dc stitch of previous round. Slip stitch to first stitch of Ch1 turning chain.
Round 8:  Ch 1, 1 sc in each dc stitch of previous round. Slip stitch to first stitch of Ch1 turning chain.
Round 9 to round 12: Ch 3, then 1 dc in each stitch.
Round 13 & round 14: Ch 2, 1 half dc in each sttich of previous round.
Round 15: Ch 3, *1 dc in each of next three st, then 2 dc in fourth st.  Repeat * to end, then slip stitch to top of the turning chain.
Round 16: Ch 3, then 1 dc in each stitch of previous round till the end. Slip stitch to top of turning chain.
Round 17: Ch 3, 1 dc in each stitch of previous round.

For the short curled up brim,  I used 4 mm crochet hook.  From hindsight, you could try using a 2 or 3mm crochet hook to make the brim a bit tighter and stiffer maybe.

Round 18:  do a 4 shell crochet stitch using dc.  Ch 1, *1 sc in next stitch, skip 1 dc stitch, then 4 dc in next stitch, skip 1 dc stitch from previous round**.  Repeat * to ** to the end, then slip stitch to top of the turning chain1.
Round 19:  do do a 5 shell crochet stitch using dc.  Ch 1, *1 sc in next stitch, skip 1 dc stitch, then 5 dc in next stitch, skip 1 dc stitch from previous round**.  Repeat * to ** end, then slip stitch to top of the turning chain1.

There are only 19 rounds for this ladies winter hat.

When I did the round 19 on the brim, I also crocheted four individual small loops about  9 to 10 chain stitches, and placed them equally spaced around the hat,  thinking of looping each of this loops onto a button I would sew onto the flower or directly onto the hat.  This is an option to pull and secure the brim onto the sides of the hat, so you can see without the floppy brim.
